LAS students have always been high achievers. No more so than today. The average ACT of incoming freshmen is 27, with a class rank in the 90th percentile. The number who participate in the college's honors program has increased 30 percent in five years.
Freshman Enrichment Programs help new students feel right at home. Programs such as Learning Communities and Global Studies enhance students’ sense of discovery and community
at U of I—in
addition to making their first semester at college among their most memorable.
LAS students are diverse. As of Fall 2005, 16 percent of LAS undergraduate students are people of color, representing 63 percent of all African American, Latina/o, and Native American students at U of I. Our students are also international. They come from more than 100 countries.
More students than ever are studying abroad. One way that LAS students are preparing for an
increasingly global society is through the LAS Courses
Abroad program—short courses held in more than a dozen countries on subjects
ranging from history and politics to ecology. Semester amd year-long opportunities are also available.
More than 70 fields of study are offered in LAS. Students are pursuing
careers in fields as diverse as genetics and international studies. Interdisciplinary studies is encouraged.
Hands-on learning experiences await all students. LAS students are experimenting with virtual reality and are conducting
research on every continent. They are tracing human ancestry, measuring
biodiversity in the Antarctic, and developing chemical processes that will improve our quality of life.
