This U of I professor was a pioneer in the study of insect physiology and credited with discovering the hormone that causes insect metamorphosis.

Who was this entomologist?

Answer: Dr. Gottfried S. Fraenkel, a professor at Illinois from 1948 to 1972

A member of the National Academy of Sciences, who conducted research on insect hormones, nutrition, and chemical ecology, he also was an accomplished pianist and has a music collection named after him in the University’s music library.
