South Asian Scholar Program to 'Build Bridges' Among Nations

An international relations specialist from Bangladesh and a business administration professor from Pakistan will be the first scholars from South Asia to reap the benefits of a new program in LAS.

Obaidul Haque, a lecturer at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Abdul Khakwani, a professor at B.Z. University, Multan, Pakistan, are visiting the campus for six months beginning in June as part of the South Asia Visiting Scholars Program, administered by the Program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security. The scholars program is supported by a grant from the Ford Foundation.

While here, they will interact with faculty members and students from a variety of disciplines related to arms control and international security. They also are expected to produce a publishable manuscript on their research. Additionally, the visiting scholars will travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with ACDIS affiliate Stephen P. Cohen at the Brookings Institution, and to the Cooperative Monitoring Center at Sandia National Laboratory in New Mexico.

The goal of the program is to help build bridges between countries and to encourage collaborative relationships, according to ACDIS director Clifford Singer. "We're particularly pleased," he says, "about the prospect of getting people from different countries in South Asia working together. Because of the political divisions and financial barriers, it's not always easy to get people to sit down together long enough to work cooperatively."
