The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Career Information Night was an excellent opportunity for my multimedia and e-learning firm to talk with students about career opportunities in writing, design, marketing, and other fields. As an LAS graduate in history, I understand the value of helping students learn more about the "real world" before they enter into it.

I really enjoyed meeting the students and discussing how their classes and other experiences may fit in with various actuarial career paths. I think our conversations helped students make decisions about future courses and also provided an independent perspective on whch types of companies to pursue. I look forward to talking with students again!

Career Information Night involves professionals from such a variety of careers that students garner information on fields they couldn't fully explore in the classroom. One of my favorite experiences from Career Night actually happens about a month or even a year later when a student calls to follow up, ask advice, or best yet, to network to find a job.

I considered it a privilege to participate in Career Information Night. Many of the students seemed intrigued that an English major could have a lifelong career as a professional photographer. After all, shouldn't we end up as writers or English teachers? My message to them was clear: My liberal arts degree from Illinois gave me a great foundation to go into many fields. I chose photography because it was my passion.

Unlike a more typical "job fair" where an alumnus represents a given employer, at LAS's Career Information Night the graduate is able to share insights and advice as to what the student may expect following graduation-both during the job search and once a job has been landed. I always find these discussions stimulating. I come away feeling good about what the future holds for tomorrow's working generation and happy that I was able to provide some guidance.
