Humanities Council Teaching Excellence Award Program
Established in 1978, the Humanities Teaching Excellence Award Program is intended to emphasize the importance of superior teaching by publicly acknowledging outstanding teachers and by enhancing their instructional activities through a modest prize. Each year one faculty member and one graduate teaching assistant may be selected for the award from nominations submitted by constituent units. Please submit your nominee for the LAS Dean’s Award or LAS Graduate Teaching Assistant Award. If eligible, nominees from those awards will be reviewed and ranked by the LAS Awards Committee for the Humanities Award. A faculty member or graduate TA can only be chosen for one LAS College award in the same year. If a faculty member or graduate TA receives any LAS College award they will not be eligible for a second College award during the next ten year period for faculty and five-year period for graduate TAs.
Award
For the faculty member, the award consists of a $1000 discretionary account to support the recipient's teaching and research. In addition, an increment of $3500 will be added to the annual salary base of the recipient. For the graduate teaching assistant, the award consists of a $2000 award. Recipients also receive a commemorative plaque presented at the LAS Recognition of Teaching Excellence.
The following general guidelines will apply:
- All nominations of humanities faculty members and teaching assistants for college awards (e.g. Dean's Award, Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching by Graduate Teaching Assistants) will automatically be considered for the humanities award.
- The established submission procedures and deadlines for the above award nominations should be observed.
- The LAS Awards Committee will serve as the selection committee for the humanities awards.
- Recipients of any LAS College award will be ineligible for subsequent college awards for ten years following their selection for faculty and five years of Graduate TAs.
Excellence in teaching is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the humanities at the University of Illinois. This program represents our commitment to recognize teachers who are truly outstanding and to encourage the members of our profession to aspire to the highest standards of excellence.
