Humanities Council Teaching Excellence Award Program

Established in 1978, the Humanities Teaching Excellence Award Program is intended to emphasize the importance of superior teaching by publicly acknowledging outstanding teachers and by enhancing their instructional activities through a modest prize. Each year one faculty member and one graduate teaching assistant will be selected for the award from nominations submitted by constituent units. For the faculty member, the award consists of a $1000 discretionary account to support the recipient's teaching and research. In addition, an increment of $3500 will be added to the annual salary base of each recipient. For the graduate teaching assistant, the award consists of a $2000 award. Recipients also receive a commemorative plaque presented at the LAS Awards Banquet in April. In addition, recipients of the award will be recognized by having their names recorded with all past recipients on a plaque located in the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities office.

The Humanities Teaching Excellence Award is intended to complement departmental, college, and campus award activities and not to replace them or detract from them. The following general guidelines will apply:

  1. All nominations of humanities faculty members and teaching assistants for college or campus awards (e.g. Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Dean's Award) will automatically be considered as well for the humanities award.
  2. The established submission procedures and deadlines for the above award nominations should be observed.
  3. The Humanities Council Committee on Scholarships and Honors will serve as the selection committee for the humanities awards.
  4. Recipients of this award will be ineligible for subsequent humanities awards for five years following their selection.

Excellence in teaching is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the humanities at the University of Illinois. This program represents our commitment to recognize teachers who are truly outstanding and to encourage the members of our profession to aspire to the highest standards of excellence.
