Lynn M. Martin Award for Distinguished Women Teachers

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in fulfillment of its mission, is devoted to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Named for the founder, the Lynn M. Martin Award for Distinguished Women Teachers is designated to promote exceptional achievement in undergraduate teaching by women. Two awards (one for Teaching Assistants and one for Faculty members) may be made annually.

Criteria

Nominations will be evaluated in terms of achievement according to the following established criteria with preference given to criteria 1 and 2:

  1. Consistent excellent performance (not just isolated instances of brilliance in the classroom)
  2. Impact on students
  3. Innovative approaches to teaching
  4. Other contributions to improved instruction, including influence on the curriculum

Award

For Faculty. An award of $1000 is placed in a discretionary account to support the recipient's teaching and research. In addition, an increment of $3500 will be added to the annual salary base of each recipient.

For Teaching Assistants. An award of $2000.

All recipients receive a commemorative plaque which is presented at the LAS Recognition of Teaching Excellence.

Eligibility

Female faculty members or teaching assistants who meet the eligibility requirements for the Campus Award For Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are eligible for this award.

Further, a faculty member or teaching assistant who receives a Lynn M. Martin Award for Distinguished Women Teachers will not be eligible for a second college award during the next five-year period, although such a person may be nominated again through this process for the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, if she remains eligible for that award.

Nomination

Nominations for this award and the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are one and the same. The criteria and procedures are included in the Provost's Guidelines on Awards for Excellence in Instruction, Advising, and Research. The LAS Awards committee will review and rank the applications received. Applications which exceed the page limit of 10 pages (excluding cover sheet and four letters from students) and which include information outside of the time period of review will not be considered. Each faculty member and teaching assistant selected as a winner of the Lynn M. Martin Award will be nominated for the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching if eligible. In cases in which a faculty member or teaching assistant is not eligible in a given year for a college award but is eligible for a campus award, the strongest nominations as determined by the Awards Committee will be forwarded.

An original and 10 (11 total) copies of the nomination must be forwarded, before 5 p.m. on the day of the deadline, to:
