In 1998, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences established the Nancy J. McCowen Distinguished Service Award to honor a selected staff member for contributions providing outstanding service to others. Honored performance will be exemplified by going above and beyond the expected level of service to the staff member's constituencies. Dedication to continuing service at an extraordinary level should be demonstrated through ongoing performance rather than with special service in a particular instance or to an individual project. It is wholly appropriate that this award was established through the generosity of Nancy J. McCowen, who served in the LAS Office of the Dean for 22 years and provided an exceptional example of service to LAS faculty, students, and staff.
One award may be made annually. The LAS Awards Committee will review and rank
the nominations received. The recommendation will be approved by the dean of
the college.
Nominations will be evaluated in terms of achievement based on whether the
individual demonstrates excellence in providing service to the constituencies
that the home unit serves, thus enhancing the image of the department and/or
college.
Recipients will receive a $2,000 award and a commemorative plaque. Both will
be presented at an LAS Awards Reception in late February.
A nominee must be a full-time staff employed within the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences for at least five years by the nomination deadline. Retirees may be
eligible if employed in a status appointment during the current calendar year. A
person who receives any of the following LAS Awards will not be eligible for a second College award during the next 10-year period: Staff Award, Nancy McCowen Distinguished Staff Service Award, Academic Professional Award.
Nominations of employees in all staff classifications are encouraged (i.e.,
clerical, storekeeper, maintenance worker).
Nominations for these awards may be made by any member of the campus community
(staff, faculty or student), but must be endorsed by the executive officer of
the nominee's unit. All nominations must be submitted on the official LAS nomination
form.
Those making a nomination for the Nancy J. McCowen Award should submit all
of the following:
-
nomination form
- nominee's job description (please limit to one page)
-
narrative of no more than three pages describing how the nominee
fulfills the stated criteria
-
no more than three letters of recommendation
All re-nominations require submission of
an updated narrative as well as a new nominating form.
The original and 10 (11 total) copies must be
forwarded, before 5 p.m. on November 2, 2007, to:
