Hands-On Field Experience Inspires Future Geologists

Ed Franklin knew at an early age that he wanted to become a geologist. He was fascinated by the Earth and the mysteries hidden beneath its surface. While pursuing that interest at the U of I, Franklin spent a summer at the Geology Summer Field Camp. "The practical, hands-on experience I gained at the field camp was invaluable experience and was an excellent preparation for my entry into the field of geology," says Franklin.

In fact, as a geologist for Standard Oil (later known as Exxon Corporation) for more than 30 years, Franklin had many opportunities to make use of what he learned that summer. For instance, while leading a field party in Venezuela in the late 1950s, he was able to directly apply the mapping and geological surveying experience he received as a U of I student attending field camp. And he wants current students to have the same opportunity.

That's why he created the Edwin H. Franklin Summer Field Camp Scholarship Fund. This fund, made possible by Franklin's personal gift and a generous 3:1 match from Exxon/Mobil Corporation, provides financial assistance to U of I students who might otherwise not be able to afford the expenses of field camp.

Today Franklin spends his time on his farm in Indiana, travels the world to visit geological and archaeological sites, and serves on the Department of Geology's GeoThrust Committee. "I've had a fantastic career, made many friends, and have had some tremendous adventures along the way. I'd like to be able to help make those same opportunities that I enjoyed available for current and future students at Illinois. The University is doing a wonderful job of educating its students, and I want to be a part of strengthening that so that others can achieve their own dreams and goals."

The Edwin H. Franklin Summer Field Camp Scholarships are helping future geologists prepare for their careers-and U of I students are grateful for the opportunity.

It's easy to read about geology in books, but the hands-on experience is what turns students into geologists. Field camp was a physical and mental challenge, but one that has made me more self-confident in my abilities. Financial support made the field camp a possibility for me . . . and will allow future students to concentrate on preparing themselves for successful careers as geologists.

I think I learned more at field camp than in any of my other classes at Illinois-it was great to have the opportunity to gain some solid training in field work and to be able to share my new ideas with so many other geologists. The field camp has given me an edge in my graduate school preparation . . . and has reassured me that I have chosen the right field.
