Operating costs exceed state funding.
With state funding now providing less than 20 percent of the college's budget—a sharp decline from the nearly 50 percent in the early 1980s—your gift helps ensure that the college will maintain its standards of excellence for decades to come.
Tuition does not cover the cost of an education.
Even as tuition rises, it still does not cover the cost of education. The true cost of educating a student at Illinois is nearly twice the amount charged as tuition. Gifts from you and others who have benefited from the "great dollar value" they obtained in LAS help keep a U of I education affordable for future students.
