The successful completion of an honors program are noted on your transcripts as well as on your diploma. These acknowledgments of work well done will aid you in the pursuit of further educational opportunities or in the job market.
Dean's List
The Dean's List is prepared each semester to honor all students whose grade-point average for that semester ranks in the upper 20 percent of their college. The minimum grade-point average establishing eligibility for the LAS Dean's List in 2007-08 is 3.65. Other eligibility criteria include completion of at least 14 hours of course work in which traditional letter grades are earned (i.e., excludes courses graded credit/no credit, satisfactory/unsatisfactory, and test-based credit that is graded pass/fail, and any course work completed through study abroad, subject to these same limitations. No consideration is given for the Dean's List until final traditional grades are in for courses designated I and DFR If you believe you should be placed on the Dean's List as a result of a grade change or a grade received more than a month after the end of the semester, notify the honors dean to ensure that corrective action will be taken.
Departmental Distinction
Students who have fulfilled the requirements of a departmental honors program may graduate with highest distinction, high distinction, or distinction. For information about departmental distinction, consult your major advisor during your sophomore year.
College Honors
Students who have completed 25 hours of honors courses (including work taken on Honors Credit Learning Agreements), satisfied the requirements for departmental distinction, or have earned at least 35 advanced hours and are in the top 12 percent of their graduating class. They are designated as graduating summa cum laude (top 3 percent), magna cum laude (top 4-7 percent), or cum laude (top 8-12 percent).
Bronze Tablet
Top 3 percent of students in each college of the University. Their names are inscribed on a Bronze Tablet that hangs in the Main Library.
Honors Convocation
Students who graduate with college honors are invited to particpate in a spring ceremony in which LAS recognzies their achievements. The ceremony acknowledges senior James Scholars, Bronze Tablet recipients, and those honored with department or college awards or scholarships. The Honors Convocation is usually held on the first Sunday in May.

Other Honors Organizations
Phi Beta Kappa
The oldest and most distinguished national honor society for liberal arts graduates, Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776. The local Gamma chapter initiates new student members each May. Members are among the top 7 percent of their graduating class.
