Program Summary
For centuries, Egypt has been the cultural center of the Arab world. Its capital, Cairo, is called "the city of a thousand minarets," and is home to the oldest university in the world, Al-Azhar. This course, intended mainly for students who have already had a course on Islam or the Middle East, will allow students to learn about the rich diversity of Islamic religious life and interpretation in Egypt today. We will learn about Egyptian history and culture, visit Cairo's major Islamic monuments, witness Sufi rituals and popular celebrations, visit Islamic charitable organizations, and meet a wide variety of Egyptians, including scholars, religious teachers, students, and social activists of various types and persuasions.
