Courses Abroad—Global Studies
December 26, 2008 - January 14, 2009
Spend your winter break experiencing life in another country, learning about the impacts of globalization and the value of developing global competencies. The Global Studies Courses Abroad program invites you to choose from eight opportunities around the world. Each course highlights how its destination reflects the distinct cultures, economies and politics that have impacted it through global processes and how these influences have been integrated locally to give the place and its inhabitants their unique history, challenges, opportunities, and identity.
See how countries respond to the growth of world economies. Learn how immigration, culture, and religion influence ideas about the world. Discover how globalization has been shaping civilizations and the natural world for centuries. The courses are taught in English and offer ample opportunities for you to explore local history, culture, and contemporary society. The excursions include unforgettable sights.
Classes carry three hours of college credit and are taught by U of I faculty. All Global Studies Courses Abroad are designated as LAS 199: Global Studies. The courses begin during the second eight weeks of the Fall 2008 term, and include at least two weeks "in the field" abroad. You must first apply and be accepted into these programs before you can register for the hours.
The overseas portion of Courses Abroad will take place generally between December 27-January 14. Program dates may vary slightly. Check the program page for specific dates.
Open to all U of I students.
Cost for LAS students: $2,450*
Cost for other students: $2,950 for each program except Brazil and Burkina Faso, which are $3,550
Deadline for Applications: September 20, 2008
Applications and a non-refundable $25 application fee can be completed online. Confirmations of course offerings and dates, based on minimum enrollments, will be made after the deadline.
*Participants from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences automatically receive a $500 scholarship to complete their Global Studies Course Abroad (or $1,100 if participating in the Brazil or Burkina Faso programs). Other students should check with their home college. Program fees are subject to change due to exchange rate fluctuations, late-added fuel surcharges, and the number of participants.
