Barcelona, Spain
Program Summary
The course provides an introduction to some of the dominant features of European civilization, in particular the Mediterranean. As Barcelona grows from a strategically insignificant fishing village (27 BC) into the dense, multiethnic megalopolis of today, we reflect on its political and governmental institutions, its business and economics, its international relations, as well as its language, literature, art and architects (e.g. Gaudi, Dali, Picasso, Miro). We conclude with a review of ways in which Barcelona is addressing the social and racial problems that beset all the great cities in today's global world. Morning lectures are followed by afternoon visits to prominent sites; excursions are made by bus to Ampuries and the Dali Museum, as well as to the Codorniu ("cava"/champagne) vineyards, a very important source of this region's wealth.
