Jerusalem, Israel

Program Summary

Israel

Travel to Jerusalem to discover and learn about cultural diversity, inter-cultural relationships, and immigration in Israel and how it is managed within educational, social, and government sectors. Learn about immigration flows into Israel and engage with community leaders and NGOs to understand the policies and practices that support immigrants' local integration. Although Israel is the Jewish homeland, the country has a 20 percent Arab minority, which includes Muslims, Christians, and Druze. In the nearly 61 years of its existence, Israel absorbed immigrants from almost every country in the world. This diversity, in many ways, is what gives Israel strength, but interactions between the different cultures, nationalities, and religions continue to present the people of Israel with significant issues.

You will learn about cultural diversity and immigration in Israel and how different educational, social, governmental, non-governmental, and private organizations deal with these issues. Course readings and classwork in Illinois will approach the history and politics of the state of Israel from multiple perspectives. In Jerusalem you will engage with community leaders, members of social, educational, national, and religious organizations, and members of different communities. These interactions will bring about a deeper understanding of these issues and possibilities for solutions that cultural diversity and immigration bring up.
