Istanbul, Turkey

Program Summary

Istanbul

Istanbul is truly the crossroads between East and West. Its position on the Bosphorus has made it a desirable acquisition since ancient times. The only city that spans Europe and Asia, it was the capital of the Roman Empire, the center of the Byzantium Empire, and later the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Today the Republic is poised to become part of Europe, and Istanbul will remain a major force in shaping global culture. The center of global trade from ancient times throughout the Middle Ages, Istanbul displays the multinationalism of a civilization with a glorious ancient past and an exciting future. The Byzantine and Ottoman Empires made Istanbul an influential center both artistically and architecturally. The Grand and Spice Bazaars give visitors a taste of how the past still influences the present. Excursions will include mosques, churches, castles, museums, and other historical sites.
