Urubamba, Peru

Program Summary

The course travels to Urubamba, Peru, a small community in the Andes, to study how the development issues of health, education, women's rights, and financing play out at the local level and to work on a community project. Through a service-learning project, students will explore how theories of international development may (or may not) work in practice while experiencing a cultural immersion in a Peruvian village. We will work mornings at a project installing simple ceramic water filters into homes and will spend afternoons with local leaders and community professionals in health, education, and government; trips to Cuzco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, and the Incan ruins of Pisaq and Ollantaytambo are also planned.
