Program Summary
This course provides a comprehensive survey of the impact of multiculturalism from the ancient Etruscans to the contemporary urban environment of Rome. You will learn how to "read" archaeological artifacts to evaluate how scholars have pieced together our knowledge of the early Italic cultures. You will examine ancient Roman accounts of the coalescence of these diverse peoples into Roman citizens and allies as well as the conquest and absorption of their enemies. And in situ you will study the colossal monuments the Romans designed to govern, provide for, and entertain its heterogeneous urban population of approximately 1 million people. Finally you will study similar processes that enabled the growth of Christianity and the papacy and ensured its survival into the medieval period.
