Salvador da bahia, Brazil
Program Summary
Salvador da Bahia, Brazil's 'City of Joy,' is known for its cultural legacy as the main port of entry for the African diaspora starting as early as the 1550s. This course focuses on Bahia's African roots from the slavery period and leads up to the racial issues of today. Participants will come to appreciate Bahia's constant expression and celebration of its Afro-Brazilian heritage by examining relevant texts from a variety of disciplines, visiting the city's numerous historical sites, museums and other cultural and artistic centers, including temples of the Afro-Brazilian religious practices of Candomble and Umbanda. A series of lectures by local scholars will focus on how the city has been shaped by and has benefited from global movements.
