Program Summary

Singapore

Singapore is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city-state that celebrates its cultural-racial diversity, yet maintains a 'uniquely Singapore' national identity. This course focuses on accommodation as one of the many faces of globalization, and the rich and challenging consequences of cultures in contact. You will explore how language use is negotiated in multilingual spaces, and how specific cultural practices emerge in response to contact with other local cultural practices. The group will explore Chinese, Malay and Indian neighborhoods and cultural practices, participate in discussions with local scholars, meet with Singaporean students to reflect on each others' experiences in diverse cultures, and enjoy presentations that enhance your understanding of linguistic and cultural practices of diverse ethnic groups in contact.

This Discovery Course is open only to freshmen.
