East Asian Languages and Cultures Specialization Majors
Two new secondary education teacher majors are available to students: Mandarin Chinese specialization and Japanese specialization. This program will qualify students for teaching Chinese or Japanese in Illinois K-12 schools under the No Child Left Behind law.

Hindi Studies Minor
Hindi is spoken or understood by 383 million of the nearly 1 billion inhabitants of India and serves as one of the two official link languages of the Republic of India. The minor in Hindi Studies is designed for students interested in receiving training in processing and using Hindi in a wide variety of authentic (from informal to institutional) contexts. Students will be encouraged to read authentic Hindi material from different genres and registers (including Hindi print media). Completion of the minor requires at least 19 hours in applicable courses.

Arabic Studies Minor
Arabic constitutes a kind of bridge between Africa and Asia: it is spoken by 208 million people from Morocco to southern Iran and is one of the official languages of the United Nations. It is also the sacred language of Islam, one of the major world religions, and as such is known all over the world, including Indonesia, India, and Bangladesh, the countries with the largest Muslim populations.
LGBT/Queer Studies Minor
The LGBT/Queer Studies interdisciplinary minor requires 18 hours of courses. Six credits come from "Intro to Queer Studies" and either "Trans Bodies and Politics" or "Postcolonial Queer." Four other courses should be selected, amongst "Sex in Nature and Culture," "Sexuality and Literature," "Race, Sex, Deviance," "Sex, Power, and Politics," "Lesbian Print Cultures," and more.
