Welcome to our awesome new website!

As you may have noticed, the LAS website is sporting a new look.

The makeover was driven by a need to improve accessibility and web standards support. But the site was also overdue for some re-organization, cleaning, and a fresh look to tie it all together.

We encourage you to explore the site. If you find any broken links or other issues we may have missed, please let us know. We will be continually refining the site, adding new features and functionality. We are making every effort to ensure the site meets the needs of our current and future students, our alumni, our faculty and staff, and all other friends of the college.

Thanks for visiting!

The website was developed by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, with the design by the LAS Office of Communications and Marketing and implementation by ATLAS Web Services.

Advanced Composition

All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are required to complete Advanced Composition at some point after completing the Composition I requirement.

The Advanced Composition requirement is intended to enhance your writing ability in an academic discipline. Advanced Composition builds on the abilities acquired in Composition I, but allows you to focus those abilities on writing that relates to a specific discipline. The courses meeting this requirement will generally be within your major or courses that fulfill other general education requirements. They may be either individual courses or "writing-intensive" sections of a course. You should check with your advisor to find out which courses in your major meet this requirement.

There will be some majors that do not have Advanced Composition courses for all students in the major to take. Courses that have writing as their primary focus (i.e., business and technical writing, rhetoric) and writing-intensive sections of courses that meet specific general education requirements will be available to fulfill this requirement. Priority registration in Business and Technical Writing and Rhetoric 233 will be given to students in degree programs requiring those courses. Therefore, students in programs not specifically requiring Business and Technical Writing or Rhetoric 233 should not expect to get enrollment in these courses.

Ordinarily, students must fulfill this requirement through enrollment in an appropriate U. of I. class. Advanced Composition courses are approved on the basis of the methodology of the course rather than on the course content. It is difficult to find courses at other institutions that will fulfill this requirement.
